A Song of Ice And Fire Miniatures: Starting with the Lannisters

So, I’ve gotten my first game of A Song of Ice and Fire in, and I’m starting to paint the core set. I decided to start with the Lannisters, as they’ll be my primary army. In particular, I really liked how the Mountain and The Mountain’s Men played during the game, so decided to reward them with a paint job.

I’ll be adding grass flocking to them once I’m stateside. For The Mountain’s Men, I wanted them to look grizzled and battle-hardened, looking like they’d been pillaging the Riverlands for a while, so they all have blood on their swords, and have mud all over their feet and lower cloaks. I used a brown wash on them to make them very gritty. Being The Mountain’s Men, they’re all in yellow as well.

Then we have a unit of the Lannister Guardsmen:

I chose to go with something akin to the Lannister armor in the TV show, with black for the armor instead of silver or gold like I’ve seen elsewhere. In addition, their clothing is a darker red, while their plumes and the banner are a bright red to contrast them. I’ve gotta say, the gold lining on all of them is a slow pain in the ass, but they look great on the table.

I’ve still got another unit of guardsmen and a unit of halberdiers, as well as the three Lannister siblings to paint up, then it’s on to the Starks. I’ve gotten everything but the gold done on those other two units, so now it’s the slow process of getting that done. Hopefully I’ll be done by next week. I imagine the Starks will be easier, but I’ve been tempted to give the Berzerkers individually colored tartans.

I’ve never painted a tartan before. Please talk me out of it.

I beg you.
