Return to Middle Earth: The Lord of the Rings/Hobbit Miniatures Game

I played the Lord of the Rings Miniatures Game when it first came out nearly 20 years ago (writing that sentence makes me feel old. Old, Gandalf!). I feel like it’s a better system than Warhammer Fantasy or 40k, and really enjoyed it. Alas, not many people played it, and when I joined the Navy, my stuff got all packed up, and many of my miniatures vanished, never to be seen again in The West.

Recently, while digging through all my unpainted minis, I stumbled upon the LotR minis I still have. I ended up with two starter sets from the Hobbit boxed set while working at The Comic Book Shop, and had a few scattered LotR minis. I decided to try diving back in.

Since then, I’ve been scouring Ebay, buying up the remainder of the minis left at the game shops around town, and been painting furiously. The game has no players, as far as I can tell, in Spokane, but it appears to be making a little bit of a comeback online. When sharing the photos of my painted minis on a local Facebook group, a few people expressed interest in learning, so we may have a chance to get something going here in town.

The game plays much looser than the other GW games, allowing you to have a lot of variety and flexibility when building a game. I much prefer the story-style games over just pure “kill everything with balanced points” that many people seem to like.

I’m plotting out a campaign where we play through the entirety of the Lord of the Rings, with players affecting the outcome with every mission. I’ll post more up about that at a later point.

I’ll probably be posting a bit more about the game as I play more sessions and get back into the game. I’m posting up all my painting progress on Twitter, so you can check over there and see what I’m doing.
