Back in Time: Heading Back to 4e D&D

4e got a bum rap. I’ve said it before, and it doesn’t need a long treatise right now. But I’ve been missing it over the last few years, and with a nine-year-old and a twelve-year-old, Bridget and I have decided to give 4e a spin again!

I’ve been rereading the Rules Compendium to get reacquainted with the rules, trying to remember all that I had forgotten in learning 5e. There are so many amazing things about 4e to love, and the dynamics of every combat are something I look forward to.

121468I ran Keep on the Borderlands: Season of Serpents for D&D Encounters, and still have all the materials, so I sat down and got some characters made with the kids.

Eliza immediately knew she wanted to be an Elf, and after looking through PHB 1 & 2, she chose a Druid. She tells me she wants to transform into a pink lion when she shape changes, so that will be fun.

Gabe had a good idea of what he wanted: a Dragonborn Paladin. When looking through the list of the Gods of the Nentir Vale, he asked if he would worship all of the gods at once. A very cool idea, so he’ll be serving the will of the gods of good.

Bridget liked the idea of a Shifter, and looking over PHB 2 and Arcane Power, she decided to be a Cosmic Sorcerer, which are a really cool class and subclass.

I’ve been getting models all ready to go for each encounter, and am working on getting all my terrain prepared so that the maps that come with the adventure won’t be two-dimensional.

As the game progresses, I’ll be sure to continue sharing our adventures!

  • Disappointed this isn’t about time travel, but yeah, 4th Ed was very good at what it did. 🙂
