DM Introduces Carefully Balanced Encounter, Wizard Solves It With One Spell

A Dungeons & Dragons dungeon master’s carefully balanced combat encounter collapsed Friday night after a wizard resolved the entire fight with a single spell cast in the first round.

The encounter, which reportedly took several hours to design, featured multiple enemy types, environmental hazards, and a dramatic buildup intended to test the party’s resources. None of this survived contact with a well-timed spell and a failed saving throw.

“I had contingencies,” the DM said, flipping through notes that were no longer relevant. “I really thought I did.”

According to witnesses, the wizard hesitated briefly before casting, apologizing in advance and clarifying that the spell was “technically allowed.” Seconds later, the primary threat was removed from play, the secondary enemies surrendered, and the room fell quiet.

Other players expressed mixed emotions. “I was excited to do something cool,” said the fighter, who had not yet taken a turn. “But I guess that was cool, too.”

The wizard maintained that the outcome was unintentional. “I didn’t even optimize,” they said. “I just read the spell.”

The DM declined to retroactively alter the encounter, stating that doing so would feel unfair. Instead, the session pivoted to roleplay as the party processed the aftermath of a fight that was supposed to define the arc.

Future encounters are expected to include additional resistances, legendary actions, and an enemy wizard who “definitely read the same spell list.”
