Man Brings Narrative Army to Tournament, Shocked by Results

Local wargamer Kevin R. arrived at a regional tabletop tournament Saturday with a fully painted, lore-accurate army and left several hours later expressing “genuine surprise” at how poorly it performed in competitive play.

According to witnesses, Kevin’s list was carefully constructed to reflect the tragic last stand of a doomed regiment, complete with suboptimal unit choices, characterful wargear, and a backstory printed and tucked neatly into his army case. Tournament officials confirmed the list was legal, though one noted it was “boldly unconcerned with efficiency.”

“I just wanted something that told a story,” Kevin said after his third consecutive loss. “I didn’t think that meant I’d be tabled by turn two.”

Opponents described facing the army as “emotionally compelling” but “strategically generous.” One player praised the paint job before efficiently removing half the models in the opening shooting phase. Another reportedly asked, “Are you sure you don’t want to proxy that?”

Kevin admitted he declined several suggestions to swap units or adjust tactics mid-event, citing the regiment’s established lore and “what they would realistically do in this situation.” Tournament judges confirmed this included refusing an optimal charge because “it wouldn’t make sense for the character.”

Despite the results, Kevin remained positive, noting that his army “looked incredible on the table” and that several players asked about its backstory. He has since announced plans to refine the list for future events while “keeping the soul intact.”

The army is expected to return next season, possibly with fewer narrative weaknesses and slightly more anti-tank.
